Technology is constantly changing and upgrading. The learning & development, and training industries need to be cognisant of the fact that changing technology results in a change in learning behaviour among learners. Although education technology still largely consists of eLearning and mobile learning, many other newer ideas are taking shape every day. The role of technology in education and training is to support learning. In the near future, we will see technology being used in classrooms to enhance learning, retain knowledge and apply learning to active real-life tasks. These active environments or classrooms may tap into technologies such as video simulations, electronic systems, and even simple to advanced robotics.

Artificial Intelligence

The inclusion of Artificial Intelligence or AI has allowed for the growth of adaptive learning. Every learner is able to have an individualistic learning experience through AI, which creates custom learning paths based on every individual learners’ skillset. Custom learning paths make the application and results of learning unbiased, thus motivating learners to achieve more.

Virtual Worlds

Virtual Worlds are not new – they have been around since early the 2000s allowing users to live an alternate life online. Virtual worlds such as Second Life are still popular across the globe. Learning innovators are now going back to the drawing board to explore the possibility of learning and engaging with the learner in a virtual world.

Virtual worlds are popular for social collaboration, 3D graphics and the ability to test your own learning.

Alternate Reality Games

Multi-player games, which are not limited to computers or gaming consoles, but are inclusive of the use of mobile technology such as email and SMS, are popularly known as Alternate Reality Games or ARGs. The platforms used by ARGs allow for multi-channel and multi-dimensional communication, which are great tools to enhance learning. In the near future, we will see ARG models being developed specifically for learning and training.

 Wearable Tech

Wearable tech or wearable computing, may gain traction in the training and learning industry and move forward the way mobile learning has. Wearable tech such as Google glasses, smartwatches, fitness bands and so on, may be used in the future as edu-tech tools that support small and impactful dozes of learning.
